The MADCAP Drama Project started in 2003 as a British Council funded effort to promote Drama and Storytelling in ELT and has since 2005 functioned as a SIG within ELTAM. The project's main objective is to increase the interest among both teachers and students in using various forms of drama and theatre in ELT as part of the concept of Content-Based Learning. Supplying content to language learning has proved to engage the learner and stimulate participation. Moreover, assuming roles reduces stress, thus facilitating language acquisition, while encouraging learners to take responsibility for their own learning.
Among the most prominent MADCAP Drama Project activities are the two Drama in ELT Summer Schools held in 2003 and 2004 which introduced the participants to the basic Drama and Storytelling techniques to be used in the classroom. Two National Drama Festivals were organised as immediate follow-up to the summer schools, the second of which animated as many as 30 teachers and around 300 students of different ages, from young learners to teenagers. Several workshops were organised too, some presenting new drama techniques for the EL classroom, some feeding back on recent drama conferences and events. The beginning of 2006 was marked with an intensive course on How to Write a Play, preparing teachers to guide students in the creative process of producing a play of their own.
Apart from the basic objective to motivate teachers to use Drama in their ELT practice in a more informed way and to encourage students to participate actively in Drama and other creative activities, thus increasing their motivation for learning the English language, the project also aims at developing and expanding a widespread network of interested-in-drama ELT professionals in the country and in the region, which in turn will provide conditions for future sustainable development.

CLIL SIG within ELTAM was founded in June 2005 in order to introduce the CLIL concept and to gain active support for this work in the wider educational scheme in Macedonia. Among the other objectives of the group are to provide conditions for operational networking in the region through sharing the experience with colleagues from the neighboring countries; to organize and motivate teachers and students to implement CLIL in their daily classes and to enable teachers (both subject and language) to use CLIL in ways relevant to their needs and wants.
CLIL is an educational approach in which non-language subjects are taught through a foreign, second or other additional language. The group highlights the need to focus on meaning, alongside form, to achieve best practice. Through establishing a sustainable network of ‘CLILers’ who will use CLIL in their classrooms on a regular basis, the group aims at increased students’ motivation in the learning of the English language. The efforts will be directed towards transparent informing and involvement of as many teachers and student teachers as possible.
If you want to learn more about the work of CLIL SIG, please contact Elena Sentevska at elena.s@eltam.org.mk.

Event date: Spring and early summer, 2005
Number: 100 English language teachers in Struga, Strumica, Veles and Tetovo
C.A.R.E. (Community Awareness of Regional English) Project evolved to create teacher development opportunities outside the capital of Skopje and to stimulate activity in the regional branches of ELTAM (English language teachers of Macedonia). The project reached out to communities that are traditionally underserved. Dolores Gephart and Robert Brame, ESP - ELFs in Macedonia, and Fanija Smickovska, ELTAM committee member, led others in addressing these problems that former ELF Leah Reinstein originally identified. During the spring and early summer, a series of teacher training workshops were held on Saturdays in the cities of Struga, Strumica, Veles, and SEE (Southeastern European University) in Tetovo. RELO Budapest provided the travel grant for ELF presenters: Sharon Danseau and Andy Halvorsen from Albania; Michelle Gaston, Philip Bataglia and Travis Thurston from Kosovo; and Charlotte Osuna
from Serbia. The PAO in Skopje contributed the grant for teacher enrichment materials for the classrooms. OSCE offered to sponsor rural teachers to attend. Members of ELTAM served as regional coordinators who recruited and organized the local venues: Aleksandra Popovski Golubovic from Struga, Risto Kostadinov from Strumica, Jagoda Trajcova from Veles and Kujtim Ramadani from Tetovo. A publication of workshop materials will be distributed outside of the capital of Skopje and it will be disseminated later to all participants. Sustainability is ensured through the continuity of the ELTAM project in 2005-2006 which aims at training members to hold interactive workshops for teacher training.

Welcome to the Communication and Leadership Club. It was a joint project of ELTAM, the American Embassy and the Centre for Foreign Languages.
The mission of the Club was to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member had the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn fostered self-confidence and personal growth.
How we started...
The idea about the project was born in May 2001 at IATEFL 2001 in Plovdiv when Meri Nizamovska and Marija Kusevska started a workshop called Communication & Leadership. They got extremely interested and enthusiastic about the topic and decided to start the project in our country. The project was submitted to the American Embassy and won the grant.
The project was successfully launched in October 2001 with a three-day workshop. The Open Society Institute - Macedonia financially supported the workshop and made it possible for us to bring Ed Pope, a distinguished Toastmaster's speaker, to Macedonia. The workshop was a wonderful introduction and demonstration of the program. It was attended by 40 teachers and 30 other people of different occupations: sales representatives, managers, journalists, students, etc.
The Club now has 20 members. It is chartered with Toastmasters International (TI), an international educational organization. Our mentor, sponsor and sponsor club are from Phoenix, Arizona.
